Thousands of students from 22 schools of Sunsari deprived from appearing their second term examinations that started from Sunday due to the Maoist affiliated student union All Nepal National Independent Student Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) padlocking examination center.

Gularia tense after Maoist attack victim dies

KATHMANDU, Feb 26 - Gularia remained tense following the death of a person who was injured during an attack by the Maoists on Sunday.

According to a local Ram Lal Yadav, one Zileram Yadav of Gularia-3 was injured in a Maoist attack while attending a marriage procession.

Yadav had died Monday morning while undergoing treatment in India.

The body of the deceased was brought back to the district hospital for post mortem from Baharaich, India, where he was undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, Arun Kumar Yadav, who was also injured in the attack, is out of danger now.

As soon as the news of the incident spread, the hospital premises were thronged by worried locals. The police have heightened security in the premises to avoid any untoward incident.

Meanwhile, Bardia was affected on the second day of the indefinite strike called by the Madhesi community demanding the release of a local Kittu Yadav. Yadav, who was accused of murdering a local Maoist Madhesi leader Nankau Godia, was taken into police custody on Thursday.

Due to the banda, shops, businesses, transportation services and factories in the headquarters Guleria are completely shut.

According to the police, vehicular movement on the east-west Mahendra Highway and the Nepalgunj-Guleria road has been completely halted.

On the other hand, Maoists allege that it is a "conspiracy" to foil the mass meeting to be held tomorrow in Nepalgunj, which is to be addressed by the Maoist chairman Prachanda.

I am a Swiss national and practice Buddhism. I have been to Lumbini, Nepal, the birth place of Siddharta Gautama and other places like Kathmandu, Pokhara, Lukla, Gorkha and several Himalayan regions, many times. I love Nepal the way Nepalese do.
The reason I have so much affection towards Nepal may be because my professor and mentor, the late Tony Hagen, renowned economist and very popular with Nepalese people, loveed Nepal more than his own country, Switzerland. He never tired of talking about Nepal.

Though I am a native of Zurich, the German speaking city of Switzerland, I am currently residing in Rue de Rhone (Rhone lane or avenue) of Geneva, the French speaking part of the Swiss confederation. I have been here three years because of my employment contract with the Swiss Bank, "Credit Suisse". All of Switzerland's major banks are located within walking distance.

It is the reason most of the employees of different banks come to a very popular eatery, "cafe de Geneve" to have their breakfast and lunch. At these times, we always try to outsmart our colleagues and friends of different banks by initiating a very hot or new item of talk. Swiss tradition is that whoever has a new or very hot topic is considered to be a smarter than the others. But the topic should be genuine and authentic. Anyone can lose his or her image for a whole lifetime if he or she tells an unreliable story. So, the Swiss people have a habit of speaking based on authenticity.

Very recently, we were all outsmarted by our friends at another bank. I was particularly shocked because the topic was related to Nepal, my dream country and by faith my mother country because Buddhism was born in Nepal.

The very hot item of talk was so shocking that if the people of Nepal listened to it, they would have a million watt electric shock. The leaders of the Maoist Party including ministers of the present Nepal Government, namely, Prachanda (Pushpa K. Dahal), Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, Krishna Mahara, Hishila Yami and others were here to transfer a huge amount of money from Indian Banks to major Swiss Banks. The amount of that money is even more shocking because it is in the hundreds of million Euros. If the people of Nepal ask the Swiss Government, it can influence the Swiss Banks for the disclosure of the amounts and the account holders.

For my part, as a person having deep affection towards Nepal, I will do my best to find things in details but the Nepali people should understand my limitations as an Assistant Manager. The Nepali people should ask the Swiss Government to freeze the money as soon as possible otherwise the Swiss politicians could be bribed by the Banks to keep the Bank's secrecy.

It has also been said that some European Union members are helping the Maoists to transfer money to Swiss Banks. Why are the capitalist western countries helping extremist radical Maoists is beyond my understanding which could be a good subject of research for the people of Nepal.

Maoist-affiliated workers disrupt distribution of newspapers

Close on the heels of similar disruption in Nepal Samacharpatra daily a few weeks ago, the Maoist-affiliated workers have disrupted the distribution of Annapurna Post and The Himalayan Times.

"For the last 3 days there has been a disruption in the distribution of AP and THT. On 21st July it did not reach the market because all distribution in Kathmandu was hijacked by the Maoist affiliated trade union," states a statement issued by Ram Pradhan, the editor of THT, on behalf of The International Media Network Nepal, on Saturday.

The Maoist affiliated trade union workers (delivery boys) creating obstruction beat up dispatch staff of Annapurna Post and The Himalayan Times. "We conclude that such act is a blatant attack on the independent press and interference in the people's right to information," the statement adds.

According to the publisher, the delivery boys are not affiliated to the publishing organisations of the newspapers .. "Nine distribution agencies including RB News are involved in the distribution of these dailies and they manage all the things related to the distribution of these dailies. It is no concern of the publishers of Annapurna Post and The Himalayan Times on what kind of individuals are involved in the distribution of the papers and how much salary is paid to them," the statement says.

The publisher has said that the act of the Maoist affiliated trade union into unilaterally and illogically demanding that delivery workers be given permanent employment is "a mockery of the labour laws in this country."

"We believe that the rights of working staffers should be protected. However, the act of piling newspapers in the front door of their offices by taking control of the vehicles carrying the papers in the name of workers is a criminal offence. It is highly regrettable that the government is a silent spectator even at a time when a criminal act is being committed in media houses with impunity. The government has proved to be powerless to protect the right and independence of journalists."

Recalling similar disruptions in Nepal Samacharpatra and in Kantipur and The Kathmandu Post some weeks ago, the statement says that incidents like these show that there is planned offensive against the private media houses. "This should be taken with utmost seriousness and there is the need to raise strong voices for press freedom."

The statement adds that the publication of the newspapers will have to be suspended if the government continues to be a hapless onlooker and keeps tolerating the unjustified defiance of the Maoists. "We urge all media houses, journalists, political parties, international community, civil society readers and world agencies concerned with the development of media, protection of journalists and their rights, and press freedom to take the matter very seriously and express their solidarity for the freedom and independence of press in Nepal." nepalnews.com sd Jul 21 07
