Cold questions for embattled Nepal

The upshot of it all is that Nepal should be allowed to emerge as a stable democracy. The beneficiary would be Nepalis as well as both the countries in their neighborhood. The sooner the neighbors realize this, the better.

Nepal's capital on Wednesday appeared like a city under seize, with shops closed and serpentine lines of vehicles in front of gas stations. Few residents, already struggling to survive cold winter days and nights amid power interruptions of eight hours a day, had expected supply lines cut a week before to remain severed for so long.

One of the most disturbing statements in this article is the assertion by the Maoists/YCL that they could take over the whole of the Kathmandu Valley in 5 mins. Of course this could just be an empty boast but why make it if not to intimidate people?
It raises two questions for me:
1. If the Maoists fail to get their own way in the elections will they attempt to "take over the Kathmandu Valley in these 5 mins?"
2. Who let these Maoists into the Kathmandu Valley in the first place? Was it the King, or was he trying to keep them OUT?

Yet another cold analysis based on stark reason of pessimism to make away with the honour of the existence of 250 years old monarquic system.Kosovo had the civil ethnic massacre of millions but it's not the case in nepal when our connivence made possible the life spam upto 250 years of this dynasty.Hindu(¡if really he is!)king Gyanendra can recite all the best poems of democracy and see the PIONEER FEEDBACK of architect of NEPALI democracy.here we're,struggling to manage two meals a day,NEPOTISM,CASTEISM,POLITICAL DYNASTIES as so the maoists too. now the turn goes to the people for their own existence as a person with its individual rights secured.Perhaps the transitional period would be the most difficult period we face,as their is a clear lack of safe landing from these political actors who already got terrorized of loosing their legacy but they forget that a politician always has another option as a political qualitative advantage and "that is to get retired in an adequate moment of their career".So only a true democracy would be barring them to stick with the public remunerating positions if we're determined to have a true institutionalized democracy.Trust on DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED institutions is something that we'd establish after CA.

Nepal lived in an illusive harmony but there is no perfect harmony in the world. It must be accepted that there is no hatred among Nepalese. They make good friends, neighbors, community and compatriots. But the hegemony of Nepali speaking and especially parbate bahun and chhetri is very true. What is the solution? Dividing the country and breaking away or making progress in governance and improving understanding? Provinces do no guarantee good governance.

Central government in the past before the advent of second wave of democracy in 1990 favored aristocrats, landlords, those supporting Panchayat regime, Panchayat workers and relatives of the leaders. 1990 struggle did not bring much sought changes and briefcase appointments to the lucrative posts were at the apogee where all bahun chhetri madheshi newar enjoyed without any discrimination whoever could make a deal with the leader/minister (well stuffed briefcase diplomacy). That is one of the darkest era of corrupt governments, which paved way for the Maoist insurgency clandestinely supported by India to create instability and remove Monarchy for good to fulfill their vested agenda. Else there is no reason to get shelter and arm supply to the hardliner communists from Nepal’s lone gateway, the world’s greatest democracy. Monarchy has role in both stabilizing and destabilizing Neapl. India and Maoist CMN-UML and now NC and Madheshi parties are intent on doing away with it. Best option would have been a provision in the constitution that monarchism can be abolished any time the majority MPs feel to do so. It could have averted conspiracies, instabilities and bloodshed.

Nepal never saw desired stable and good governance. If we retrospect all major political and economic incidents after Nepal first saw democracy in 2007 BS and was opened to the world, stability of both governance and policies was a daydream. Undoubtedly the active partners to this scenario have been royalties, aristocrats, landlords, smugglers internally, and India and the west externally. The leadership by corrupt-minded leaders was well manipulated by these destabilizing factors that was more vivid and conspicuous when several coalition governments were formed and majority government could not complete their full term due to internal wrangling fueled by the destabilizing factors.

PM GPK is an example of a foreign influence in Nepalese politics when we realize how he is powerful despite his lacking popular base unlike in any democracy. He has strong support from India and so behaves like a dictator and any criticism he whisks off. But now situation is rapidly changing. He may not have his heydays any more as Nepal is drowning in never ending internal feuds and struggles. The demise of 9-month minority government led by late MMA was one of GPK's blunders in democratic governance, must have been instigated by India and the west power blocks paving wave of coalition governments where MPs were brought or sold brazenly. Truthfully and accepted by the NC that NC was mandated by that general election conducted after dissolution of the parliament under the whim of then PM GPK to stay on the opposition, came back to power again and again colluding with RPP who stands for old regime of feudalism, dictatorship and corruption. His bickering with SBD to bestow NC leadership to his ambitious daughter led to the second time dissolution of people’s elected parliament overnight conspired by the king GS.

After much drama and suffering finally Nepal was in a position to conduct the election for the first CA but conspiracies to destabilize Nepal continue. When MJF made agreement with the government paving way for the postponed CA election, the Maoists sensed conspiracy and walked away from the government setting the CA election into limbo and when the Maoists re-joined the government determined to make the election a success this time, the Madheshi leaders revolted. There are many shades to all these happenings and especially the latest incidents and scenario are threatening our nationalism, livelihood, food, fuel and everything that we have amassed and preserved for centuries including peace and harmony.

Should Nepal be divided into one Madhesh, one Pahad and one Himal province? If drawn in map it will give an elongated shape. Provinces are not created anywhere in the world at least in this shape mainly for administrative efficiency and so development potential will be dwindled from the outset. Does this option give solution to self-development and self esteem? We should have more pleasure in marching ahead as a proud Nepali as the Indian ambassador Mukharji once told after SPA were steered in to the central power that Nepal now can enjoy prosperity in very short time. That is very true that once there is stability and a good government takes the central role, Nepal can be a proud and prosperous nation in 10-20 years. But unfortunately that is not happening.

So far all parties and their leaders have deliberately failed to outline the failure of Nepalese governments and their rampant corruption culture, and even the Maoists, who championed for revolutionary changes, did not bother to emphasis on this major root of our predicaments as their party itself has been engaged on collecting extortions without public accountability for years. The luring by the destabilizing agents (bait) to help the leaders rise to the governments has been a recurring phenomenon. These power hungry leaders have given enough space to the manipulators and are creating only problems. Any allegiance to the outsiders should be stopped and our foreign policy should be unbiased towards India and China. We must cultivate and or involve proven diplomats to usher intelligent foreign policy. All Nepalese governments have fully and adequately respected India and China but New Delhi has repeatedly played a prank to deceive weak and hungry leaders. Nepal’s outright respect towards Indian leadership is not reciprocated and India’s clandestine mission to exploit water resources and perhaps secretly discovered petroleum products under Terai belt or similar naturally available lucrative products like uranium for unilateral benefit must be their main agenda to my best understanding.

Only we can make Nepal a better place for us. There cannot be better friends.

You insist on hammering home the obvious points again and again to make people aware of the danger that could be lurking every Nepalese if he or she does not search for the appropriate way to embrace Democracy.

Quite easy reading article.

I have few points to make:

First, Sikkim annexation to India is quite talked in Nepal. Almost always an argument calling Indian expansionism is forwarded. Indian expanism may be correct but one should not forget China as a expansionist either. Tibet was never part of China and Nepalese know this better than anyone else. China also claims several part of India as thier land. Sikkim, in my opinion, was located geographically in wrong point in the wrong period of history. Sikkim would have been lost anyways if not to India then to China. Basing our judgement on others to what it did to the third one is wrong in my opinion.

Second, the interference of Indian politics will always remain in Nepal. What you expect when a powerful men of your country gets married to the powerful men in India. There are many examples and I believe authors is aware of it. Here I am also refering to the powerful men of terai origin having a marital relationship with neighbouring powerfuls of Bihar or UP. Definitely, if you beat the Nepali husband, you are also beating the in-laws of powerful Indian politicians. So, what you expect? In general, every next house of Madhesi has marital relationship with Indians. Definitely, it will be easy for India to capture Terai. Ideally it has already done with marital relationship. Quite rightly, until recently there was Nepali and others were Madhise. Now we have madhesi and Pahade, and hopefully and finally, we will have Nepali.

Third, It is easy to blame others. King does, politicians does, journalist does and I do. We all like easy things. No democracy India did, yes democracy India did, no oil India did and son on. The results are also easy to interpret. We don't have to know much statistics to prove that we are losers. I wonder why Kings of Nepal don't still accept that they have made mistakes in the past. I think Nepalese citizen will forgive king if he accepts his mistakes. Will you not? The problem is leaders never accept their mistakes, the consquence of which is severe.

Despite of all problems, I love Nepal.
